The subject of uniforms in schools is an old one. It has been discussed for years, and even though there is substantial proof that they help students succeed, we remain divided on the issue.
Making students dress alike destroys their main reason to taunt each other. Less taunting means fewer outbreaks of violence and more general peace. Kids pick on other kids for being different or, in an applicable example, dressing shabby. Uniforms unify the student body and eliminate those differences.
Less wealthy students are most likely not going to be able to afford the latest trend in fashion. This makes them a target for bullying by wealthier kids and will probably result in fighting as they stand up to their tormentors. Students from all economic classes wear uniforms and lose their senses of respective superiority or inferiority. They all become more similar.
Gangs manifest themselves through colored clothing and flags; without these colors to identify individual gangs, these groups find it harder to be active in the school area. This makes for a safer learning environment for all.
Uniforms also encourage good behavior. Implementing a policy that demands students to be respectful and polite at all times while wearing their uniforms ingrains manners into their daily routine. Students wear their uniforms for the majority of the day, so for the majority of the day they have to be respectful.
Personal clothing can be an extremely distracting force in a school. Graphic t-shirts attract the eye, low cut blouses call the attention of males, girls discuss where they got their shoes in the middle of class, and the list goes on and on. In the end, school can become a huge clothing competition between students and no longer serves as an effective learning center for education.
Keeping abreast of the latest fashion statement can be both exhausting and expensive. Uniforms are cheaper and easier to maintain. If a student only worries about keeping his or her uniforms in good order, they can save both time and money.
And, on top of all that, setting out a uniform for the next day is ten times easier than putting together an outfit. They can be reused, since there is really no such thing as a stylish uniform. Considering everything involved, uniforms seem like the way to go.
